Etiology of skin diseases caused by inorganic salts

First, the cause of the disease

The skin and mucous membrane reaction caused by inorganic acids is purely caused by primary stimulation. After exposure to nitric acid, the skin turns yellow, which is caused by a yellow substance (xanthoic acid) produced after the contact between nitric acid and skin protein. In addition to acid mist, workers who manufacture sulfuric acid are constantly exposed to sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, and those who manufacture nitric acid are also exposed to nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen tetroxide, which can irritate skin and mucous membrane.

Second, the pathogenesis

The skin and mucous membrane reaction caused by inorganic acids is purely caused by primary stimulation. As far as burns are concerned, it is mainly because water is pumped out from tissues to coagulate proteins, thus causing coagulative necrosis of local tissues. From the pathogenic situation, sulfuric acid and nitric acid are heavier, but hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid, especially the former, are very volatile and have great solubility in water, so their irritation is also greater. Acid concentration and exposure time have direct influence on determining the degree of lesion. In addition, if the skin has trauma or ulceration before contact, it is easy to produce chronic ulcer that lasts for a long time.
