The main causes of filamentous keratopathy are abnormal proliferation of epithelial cells, abnormal junction between basement membrane and anterior elastic membrane, and excessive mucus-like formation

I. Etiology:

May be related to the following factors:

1. Abnormal proliferation of epithelial cells;

2. Abnormal junction between basement membrane and anterior elastic membrane;

3. Excessive mucus-like formation.

It is more common in dry eye and viral infection (adenovirus, HSV, etc.), and also in neurotrophic keratitis and cicatricial keratitis (trachoma, pemphigus, etc.). In addition, corneal abrasions, wearing contact lenses and intraocular surgery can also cause this lesion.
