Brief introduction of porphyria

Porphyrin is a group of diseases caused by the deficiency of enzymes in heme biosynthesis pathway. Porphyrins or their precursors such as delta-amino-r-ketoxvaleric acid (ALA) and cholinogen (PBG) are produced in abnormally elevated concentrations, accumulate in tissues and are excreted in urine and feces. Clinical manifestations, also known as rhodopsin disease, are divided into two categories: hereditary and acquired, mainly including photosensitive dermatitis, abdominal pain and neuropsychiatric disorders. It mainly involves nervous system and skin.
