Introduction to Hypervitaminosis A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is involved in bone growth, epithelial tissue metabolism and regeneration, and the storage of retinal rhodopsin. Vitamin A can interfere with the metabolism of chondrocytes, affect the synthesis of chondroitin sulfate, increase subperiosteal bone, and make the medullary cavity fibrosis adjacent to the cancellous bone. Large doses of vitamin A can increase bone osteoclasts in mice, increase bone resorption, and are prone to fractures; it can also make dog growth plates heal prematurely.
