The main cause of green monkey disease: Marburg virus

1. Causes of disease

It is a typical filovirus, resembling a silk thread, usually the same diameter, but the length is between 800 to 14,000 nanometers (nm), and the length is usually about 790 nm at the strongest infectivity. Infect people through close contact with monkeys. This first occurred in Europe. The laboratory staff who came into contact with African green monkeys from Uganda were infected by dissecting African green monkeys, directly contacting their internal organs, blood, and handling used utensils. Hence the name. This disease is a bleeding disorder with acute skin sensitization.

Breeders who frequently come into contact with monkeys rarely get infections, indicating that direct contact may be the main mode of transmission of the disease. This disease is usually spread through body fluids, which can be spread through contact with the patient’s blood, urine, excreta, vomit, saliva, etc., or through the skin, conjunctiva, mouth or droplets. Medical staff and laboratory workers are susceptible to infection due to multiple exposure opportunities.

2. Pathogenesis

After entering the human body, Marburg virus first invades dendritic cells and macrophages, and then is taken to regional lymph nodes, spread in the lymphatic system, and infect liver, spleen and other tissues through blood. The virus binds to the lectin on the cell surface and causes cell necrosis through the toxic effect of the viral protein. It can also cause indirect cell damage due to the interaction between the virus and the body's immune system.
